[With] THE PLAYS OF MAETERLINCK (12 volumes). New York: Dodd, Mead
and Company (1894-1923). The Autograph Edition limited to 150 sets
SIGNED by the author on a tipped-in leaf in the first volume of the
Essays and again in the first volume of the Plays. A total of 24
octavo (5-1/4" X 7-3/4") volumes, approximately 375 pages per volume.
Uniformly bound in contemporary full burgundy crushed morocco, the
spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, lettered or
ruled in gilt in each compartment, the covers triple ruled in gilt,
gilt inner dentelles, top edges gilt. Beautifully printed on
hand-made, watermarked old Stratford paper, this lovely set commands
an impressive twenty-seven inches of shelf space. Volume one includes
a photogravure portrait of Maeterlinck. Contains his best-known work
including THE BLUE BIRD and THE LIFE OF THE BEE. Spines uniformly
mellowed to a rich brown, one volume with a tiny loss at the top of
the spine, another with a small portion at top of front board pressed
in, trace of rubbing here and there; illustrated bookplate of John
Aloysius Clark at the first free endpaper of the first Essays volume.
