THIRTY-NINE LARGE DRAUGHTS, AND NUMEROUS SMALLER ENGRAVINGS WITH AN
APPENDIX, CONTAINING THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF CONSTRUCTING THE
ROYAL AND MERCANTILE NAVIES. AS INVENTED AND INTRODUCED BY SIR ROBERT
SEPPINGS, SURVEYOR OF HIS MAJESTY'S NAVY, BY JOHN KNOWLES.... [TWO
VOLUMES].

London: Printed for W. Simpkin and R. Marshall, 1822. Frontis, xvi,
438 pp., [1 lv], [118], lix-lxxvi, 27, [2 lvs], 62 pp; 16 plates. +
Atlas volume [39 folding plans]. 4to (27x21.8 cm) & Elephant Folio
(46.5 x 50 cm). Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, brown
morocco spine label, gilt lettering, five raised bands; folio volume,
quarter calf over plain boards, brown morocco spine label, gilt
lettering . Witt 18. Third edition.

First published by Steel in 1805, the work "is certainly the most
comprehensive book on naval architecture to have appeared in the
English language up to that time," (Witt, Bibliography of the
Works...by David Steel and his Successors. p. 25). A second edition
appeared in 1812 and this third and final edition in 1822. "Knowles
has sometimes been given as the author of this third edition. In
fact, the edition seems to have been made of unsold sheets from the
1812 edition to which a new title has been added at the beginning and
additional matter with 6 new lithograph plates (in the text volume)
by Knowles at the end" (Witt, p. 27). The folio volume is quite rare.
"This is due to the individual draughts being taken from the folio,
so that the actual delineations for the ship to be built could be
drawn on the mould-loft floor," according to Sim Comfort. Text
volume: boards rubbed with wear to extremities, small chip and tear
to the head of the title page; plate volume: boards rubbed, wear to
spine ends with some minor loss at foot, corners worn, some
offsetting to rear of plates, marginal tear to one plate; overall a
very good handsome set of this scarce, magnificent work. [33032]
