London, Hannah R. [SCRAP BOOK OF HANNAH R. LONDON]. n.p. n.p.,
1953-1958. 21 leaves. 4to. String-tied blue vinyl.

Hannah Ruth London [1894-1988], was "a noted scholar of Jewish
depiction in painting, [who] was born on January 2, 1894, in Boston.
She was one of five children of Lithuanian parents. After graduating
from Radcliffe College, she worked as a secretary for an antiquarian
who ran an art gallery. While working there, she developed an
interest in early American artists. She soon decided to begin
research on portraits, miniatures and silhouettes of early American
Jews. London went on to publish authoritative works on the pictorial
representation of early American Jewry: Miniatures of Early American
Jews (1953) and Portraits of Jews by Gilbert Stuart and Other Early
American Artists (1927). London married Benjamin Siegel in 1923.
Their only child, Robert Enoch, was born on June 5, 1925. He served
in the United States Army in World War II and was killed in action in
1944," Jewish Women's Archive. Approximately sixty items, about half
letters to London, including three from NY Senator Herbert Lehman, a
number of letters or notes by her, plus newspaper clippings, reviews
of her books, pamphlets, etc. List of items available upon request.
Many items have become detached from the scrapbook sheets and are
laid in loose, but overall quite a nice collection. [32981] $400.00
