*HEATON, Captain. /NOTES ON RIFLE-SHOOTING./* Bound in original
"pebbled" olive-green cloth, lettered in gilt. Published by Longman,
Green, Longman, Roberts & Green, London. 1864. 12mo, pp. viii, 114. Six
pages of interesting "sporting" advertisements at end of book.
Two editions of this book were published in 1864 and then it made no
further appearance in print until it was recently snapped up by one of
the abominable POD
hucksters, who tout paperback copies for widely varying prices. Little
is known about the author of this very scarce title, although his full
name is reported elsewhere as Henry William Heaton and, from the
dedication to this book, it appears he served with the 3rd Manchester
Rifle Volunteer Corps, "to whose encouragement and
liberality the author's position as a rifle shot is mainly due". The
Preface indicates the book is intended "for the benefit of Volunteers
and others, whose time and means do not allow them sufficient
opportunities to acquire by practice the knowledge so essential to
success." The book contains twelve chapters, dealing with all aspects of
rifles and ammunition, including loading, methods of cleaning,
descriptions of various rifles, conditions when shooting (wind,
atmosphere, light etc.), and a "Description and Peculiarities of the
Principal Rifle Ranges in Great Britain".
Our copy is a stated Second Edition, dated 1864, and is in the original
publisher's binding. The spine is sunned and the corners are a bit
turned. There are some small spots of rubbing to the rear board, and
there is fraying to the cloth at the bottom edge of the boards. The
hinges are a bit stressed, but still tight. The endpapers are
unmarked, and the contents are clean and tight. Overall, a good plus copy
of a quite rare book. WorldCat reports only nine copies in institutional
holdings, and there are no records of this book having come to auction.
Price: $175.00.
Terms of sale - the price is in USD and includes packing, postage, and
insurance. Payment by check or credit card. Returnable within seven days
of receipt if not as described.
