*JOHNSTON, Alexander Keith. /THE NATIONAL ATLAS OF HISTORICAL,
COMMERCIAL, AND POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY CONSTRUCTED FROM THE MOST RECENT AND
AUTHENTIC SOURCES/*/./ Bound in original half morocco leather over brown
cloth boards, with marbled endpapers and all edges gilt. Published by
John Johnston and W. & A. K. Johnston, Edinburgh. 1849. Folio, with 41
coloured folding maps, each measuring approximately 20" (52 cm) by 24
3/4" (63 cm).

The Lithographed Edition, "Constructed from the most recent and
authentic sources .. with a copious Index carefully compiled from the
maps." Johnston (1804-1871), at the time of this publication, was the
"Geographer at Edinburgh in Ordinary to Her Majesty" (Queen Victoria)
and a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. He was educated at the
University of Edinburgh, after which he apprenticed to an engraver. In
1826, he joined his brother in a printing and engraving business, which
gained fame under the name of W. and A. K. Johnston. He published his
first maps in 1830 and was awarded a medal at the 1851 Exhibition for
the first globe of physical geography. This atlas was first published in
1843. Later, at Baron Humboldt's suggestion, he also published the first
English atlas of physical geography. Our offering is complete and
contains detailed maps of all known parts of the world, including the
world in hemispheres and Mercator's projection, all the (then) major
countries of Europe and Asia, Australasia (with a separate map of van
Deman's Land or Tasmania), and North America (with maps of British
Canada, "the United States and Texas", and the West Indies).

The boards are rubbed, worn and soiled. The maps are, for the most part,
in very good condition, with only an occasional spot of foxing and edge
wear; otherwise they are clean and bright, with no chipping. Neat ink
name of Edward Spedding, Trinity College, Cambridge, 1852, on title
page. Overall, in good plus condition. Pagination: pp. [6], 11, 41
