AHRENS, (KOMMODORE) ADOLF. DIE SIEGESFAHRT DER "BREMEN" AUFGEZEICHNET VON CHRISTIAN HILKER. Berlin: Steiniger, (1940).Presumed 1st edn. Original cloth-backed boards, just slight wear. With the Wm. Blake bookplate of Caroline Newton (daughter of A. E. Newton). SIGNED by Ahrens on the title page. Also with a nice signed inscription by Adolf G. Woltmann (the Commodore's cousin), N.Y., June, 1941, "To dear Caroline Newton with mixed feelings of pride and humiliation." He has also drawn a genealogical chart showing his relationship to Ahrens.
The book is illustrated by photos documenting the Bremen's incredible trip from New York to Bremerhaven by way of Murmansk during the early days of the War, somehow evading the British fleet that was searching for the great ocean liner. The book had a huge press run so that ordinary copies are still plentiful in Germany (not here). At one time after the war it was banned, although Ahrens became a member of the First Bundestag.Woltmann was a leader in the field of psychiatry and psychology, especially in the treatment of children. (A unique copy of this description of a famous World War Two maritime adventure.) $90.00
