I can offer...
[MORISON, Samuel Eliot]. The Celebrated Library of Boies Penrose
Esq., F.S.A., F.R.G.S., Removed from Barbados Hill, Devon,
Pennsylvania. The First Portion: Travel & Exploration, Navigation &
Trade, A-L. [With:] The Second Portion: Travel & Exploration,
Navigation & Trade, M-Z. Fourteen Geographical Manuscripts. English
and Continental Books of the Fifteenth, Sixteenth, & Seventeenth
Centuries. London: Sotheby's, 1971.
Two volumes, each one inscribed "To Sam Morison. Best wishes,
Boies Penrose," and with Morison's signature on the front cover of
volume one. Large 8vo, original green boards. Illustrated throughout.
106; 160 pp. Corners lightly bumped, minor rubbing to the
extremities, but overall a very good set..
An interesting bookish relic linking two of the great historians
of early exploration and discovery. Penrose's best-known work, "Travel
and Discovery in the Renaissance 1420-1620," was published in 1952, and
his collection reflected his interest in that period. Morison, of
course, authored a standard biography of Christopher Columbus and two
works on European discovery of America, among many other works.
$150. plus shipping. Images:
