BIDLOO, Govard. ANATOMIA HUMANI CORPORIS, CENTUM & QUINQUE TABULIS,
PER ARTIFICIOSSIS G. DE LAIRESSE AD VIVUM DELINEATIS.... Amsterdam:
van Someren, van Dick, Boom 1685. Large folio (12-3/4" x 18-1/4")
bound in early 19th century quarter leather and marbled covers,
gilt-lettered and decorated spine. With an additional engraved title,
engraved portrait by Abraham Blooteling after Gerard de Lairesse, 104
(of 105, lacks #11) numbered copper-engraved plates by Blooteling
after Lairesse, numbers 10 and 23 folding, printer's woodcut device
at title-page, woodcut initials & tailpieces. First Edition of this
striking anatomical atlas, one of the greatest ever, whose plates
display the emotional and slightly morbid tendencies of the Baroque.
Bidloo, who later was physician to William of Orange, prepared the
specimens; Gerard de Lairesse created the drawings, meticulously
realistic images of flayed corpses or body parts juxtaposed with
objects of everyday life; and Blooteling engraved the copper plates.
The artist and the engraver achieved their dramatic result by using a
combination of techniques designed to create a sense of depth.
Garrison-Morton, 385; Heirs of Hippocrates, 667: "The plates are
considered  among  the  finest illustrations of the  Baroque  period";
Norman, 231: "[Lairesse's] illustrations brought the qualities of
Dutch still-life painting into anatomical illustration, and gave a
new, darker spiritual expression to the significance of the art of
dissection"; Wellcome, II, 165. Some plates cropped, slightly
affecting image; many plates strengthened with strips of paper; plate
10 restored. Moderate foxing, occasional minor staining. A Very Good
example of this rare and important medical atlas. $17500.00
