SENARMONT, M. de [Henri Hureau de Sénarmont, 1808 - 1862]

COMMENTAIRE AU MEMOIRE DE FRESNEL SUR LA DOUBLE REFRACTION.

Paris: Mallet-Bachelier, Imprimeur-Libraraire de L'Ecole Polytechnique. 1853.

Quarto, contemporary marbled boards with green
cloth spine, leather label with titles in gilt on
spine. 27 pp. Extrait du Journal de l'Ecole
imperiale Polytechnique, XXXV Cahier. Mild foxing
and browning, spine glazed; very good copy.

FIRST SEPARATE EDITION of de Sénarmont's theories
which lead to the invention of the de Sénarmont
Compensator. de Sénarmont's work is based largely
on the work of his predecessor, Augustin Fresnel
(1788 - 1827) and his theory of Double
Refraction. In 1843, de Sénarmont began working
on a project that he would work on for many
years, criticizing the mathematical theory of
double refraction formed by Fresnel. The result
was this work, and the developement of the de
Sénarmont Compensator. Senarmont also edited the
works of Fresnel. Fresnel is best known as the
inventor of the Fresnel lens, first adopted in
lighthouses while he was a French commissioner of
lighthouses, and found in many applications today.

$450.00 US.
