"A Jeweler’s Eye. Islamic Arts of the Book from the Vever Collection [and]
An Annotated and Illustrated Checklist of the Vever Collection"

By Glenn D. Lowry & Milo Cleveland Beach. Published in Washington by the
Arthur M. Sackler Gallery & the University of Washington Press in 1988.

A magnificent study of the Islamic books, paintings and drawings from the
Vever Collection. Henri Vever [1854-1942] was a noted French jeweler,
connoisseur and collector, one of the most important figures in the French
Art Nouveau movement, and a passionate collector of Eastern and Islamic
art and antiques. His grandson’s gift to the Sackler Gallery of his
collection of almost 500 antique Persian, Arabic, Turkish and Indian
manuscripts, paintings, albums, calligraphy and bookbindings was the
impetus for the publication of these two volumes.

The first title (“Jeweler’s Eye”) is a beautiful, color-illustrated survey
of 76 highlights of the collection. The second volume is a very important
scholarly catalog of all 491 objects, each illustrated in black & white,
with appendices listing the artists & calligraphers, and a study of the
pigments and paper of some of the objects. The first volume is beautiful
but relatively common, the second volume is of great utility for the
scholar and collector, and very difficult to obtain. Together they form a
dynamic duo, and fitting tribute to this important collection.

2 volumes, slipcased. 9.5”x12”, 240 + 446 pages. First volume with 27
black & white illustrations and 76 color plates, 2nd volume with 491+
black & white illustrations. Small nick in slipcase (see detail below),
else fine and clean. $650.00
