At the conclusion of World War One, there were over 1.5 millions Jews
living in the Ukraine. They occupied prominent positions in the
Bolshevik party, the fact of which the competing forces in the unstable
political situation in neighboring Russia (mainly the White and
Nationalist forces) used to suggest that Jews were planning to take over
the government of the Ukraine. Various forces then combined (including
the Ukrainian peasants, whose long-ingrained anti-semitism was inflamed
by this prospect) which resulted in a wholesale slaughter of Ukrainian
Jews. An estimated 180,000 to 200,000 were murdered. Most government
officials at the time (including those in the West) attempted to
suppress details of the pogroms, but so egregious were the events that
news eventually leaked out and investigations were begun. Heifetz was
the chairman of the All Ukrainian Relief Committee for the Victims of
Pogroms, under the auspices of the Red Cross. His committee conducted a
detailed investigation, interviewing survivors, and visiting the scene
of the more extensive exterminations. This book is a summary of the
committee's reports. It is horrific reading.
