4to. Publisher's brown cloth decorated in blind,
gilt title and decoration on spine (hardback).

Larned 4062 (London). Brunet IV, 864. First
American edition. First issue with the necessary
period lacking. State B (no order of sequence).
Inscribed by the author to the Spanish diplomat,
Don Angel Calderón de la Barca, the husband of
Fanny Calderón de la Barca, whose letters
Prescott helped publish as the book "Life in
Mexico" (1843) and used in his own book "The
Conquest of Mexico."

reign for two hundred years before they lost the

boards scuffed and sunned, endpapers discolored
as usual, partly obliterating author's
inscription, several leaves unopened (uncut),
