Octavo, vi, 586 pages, black and white engraved plates, battle plans. Fine.
Biography of the Civil War hero of Mobile Bay who is probably best
known for his quote during the naval battle there, "Damn the torpedoes
go
ahead!" This book is as much autobiography as biography since it is heavily
based upon Farragut's own letters and papers. Illustrated with two
tissue-guarded portraits of the admiral, three pictures, and four battle
plans (1 fold-out), and a double-spread facsimile of Farragut's letter to
his wife on the eve of the Battle of Mobile Bay. Bound in brown cloth over
boards with spine and upper board stamped in gilt and black, lower board
stamped in blind, light brown endpapers. Old owner's name label on front
pastedown, foxing to frontispiece portrait and tissue guard, and some mild
age toning to textblock. Hinges sound, not cracked. Some minor extremity
wear to exterior....... $250.00
