*HUGHES, Rev. T. S.*/* THE WORKS OF DR. ISAAC BARROW, WITH SOME ACCOUNT
OF HIS LIFE, SUMMARY OF EACH DISCOURSE, NOTES, &C.*/ Complete seven
volume set bound in original printer's boards. Printed for, and
published by, A. J. Valpy, London. 1830. 1st edition, 8vo. Index of
passages discussed, or which are the subject of a sermon, at the end of
the last volume.

Barrow (1630-1677) was an eminent English theologian and mathematician.
He was born in London and educated at both the universities of Oxford
and Cambridge, where he studied Latin, Greek, botany, astronomy,
anatomy, medicine, mathematics and theology. His religious studies
inclined him towards Arminianism. In mathematics, he was the teacher of
Isaac Newton. After a four year tour of Europe and Asia Minor
(1655-1659), he returned to England and was ordained and called to the
Greek professorship at Cambridge, and to a professorship in geometry at
Gresham College. In 1663, he was chosen as the first member of the Royal
Society after its incorporation, and soon after this was appointed the
first Lucasian professor of mathematics; a position he held until 1669,
when he resigned in favour of his former pupil, Isaac Newton. In 1672,
Charles II appointed him master of Trinity College, considering him the
best scholar in England. With the exception of Newton, Barrow is
regarded as the greatest mathematician of his time, particularly in
geometry (see Moyer, "Wycliffe Biographical Dictionary of the Church",
and the DNB).

Our set contains all of the sermons of Dr. Barrow. As each volume is
bound in the original printer's boards, they show considerable shelf
wear, and the hinges of most volumes are cracked, or weak. However, the
contents are still fairly tight, and exceptionally clean and unmarked.
Armorial bookplate of John Francis Basset to inside front board of each
volume. Overall, a good reading, and reference set, suitable for re-binding.

 Price: $350.00.

Terms of sale - the price is in USD. Payment by check, or credit card.
Packing, postage, and insurance charge within North America will be $10;
