[ACKERMANN, Rudolph]. THE MICROCOSM OF LONDON OR LONDON IN MINIATURE.
London: methuen & Co., 1904. First Edition. Three quarto (7-1/2" x
9-7/8") volumes bound in parchment-backed gray boards. An attractive
reprint of the original 1808-09 edition, illustrated with 32 color
plates by Pugin and Rowlandson. Tasteful bookplate on each front
pastedown; scattered, light foxing. Some wear to boards, mostly at
corners; spines darkened with the paper labels chipped. Very Good.
$150.00
To the person who knows and loves the literature of England, there are
few more interesting books than this. The architectural details are by
Augustus Charles Pugin, founder of the 19th century school of Gothic
architecture. The plates illustrating manners and customs are by Thomas
Rowlandson, in whom are so happily combined the graces of early 19th
century engraving and a jovial English flair for caricature. Here is the
London of David Copperfield and of Charles Lamb with its markets,
pleasure resorts, cathedrals, palaces, and public institutions. Here are
Covent Garden and Drury Lane, dreadful Bridewell and Newgate, Christie's
famous auction rooms where the libraries of the 18th century dispersed
themselves to form the great collections of the 19th century, the Court
of Chancery in session as it was in BLEAK HOUSE, and gay Vauxhall
Gardens just as they looked to Amelia and Becky Sharp.
