Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 9511 ) Johnson, Richard W[ashington]. (1827-1897). MEMOIR OF MAJ.-GEN.
GEORGE H. THOMAS.
Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1881. First printing, Original cloth,
Octavo, 322 pages, Black & white engraved plates. Very Good, ex-library.
George Henry Thomas was a career army officer who, unlike his fellow
Virginian, Robert E. Lee, decided to throw his lot in with the Union when
the Civil War broke out. The early chapters include information on Gen.
Thomas's early life, the Seminole War, the War with Mexico, and Indian
campaigns in Texas. Thomas's defense of Chickamauga prevented a total rout
of the Union forces in 1863, earning him the nickname "the Rock of
Chickamauga." He also performed valuable service at Chattanooga and
Nashville, but never achieved much acclaim. DORNBUSCH, Vol. II #2508; NEVINS
et al, Vol. II p.67. This copy is from a private institutional library and
bears a few stamps and a catalogue number on spine, but no pockets or bits
pasted in. Bound in dark green cloth over bevelled boards, spine titled in
gilt, spine and upper board have top and bottom borders stamped in black,
lower board stamped in blind. Facsimile signature of Gen. Thomas in gilt on
upper board. Minor extremity rubs, a bit of silverfishing to exterior, front
hinge has a 1' split at top edge....... $125.00
