Varro, Marcus Terentius. PARS LIBRORUM QUATTUOR ET VIGINTI DE LINGUA
LATINA. Rome: apud Vincentium Luchinum (apud Antonium Bladum). 1557. 8vo. ff.186
(including the final colophon leaf). Cont. vellum, minor defect on front
cover. 17th c. signature of Pietro Monti at foot of title page. Wormhole, with
no damage to text, at head of first 2 leaves, and some contemporary
marginalia, but otherwise a good copy. $850.00 (trade discount allowed)
A late but good edition of this philological classic first printed ca.1471.
Varro (116-27BC), who discourses on the etymology of Latin words and their
inflexions, is one of the most prolific Latin writers but of this work only
Books 5-10 are extant. An interesting feature of this edition is that the
pages listing the lost books have been left blank. In this edition the indices
are almost as long as the text. Adams V287; Bruet V, 1092 "Edition peu
commune."
