/*THE LOVER'S CORRESPONDENT A Complete Letter Writer in All Matters
Relating to Courtship and Matrimony.*/ Bound in original brick-red
decorated cloth binding. Frederick Warne and Co., London. ND (1866).
12mo, pp. 63. No date of publication is shown but the September 1866
issue of "Punch" magazine has a satirical review of this "new" book. The
first American mention of this title appears in the 1869 issue of "The
American Literary Gazette and Publishers' Circular".

A unique and very scarce book. No copies currently being offered for
sale anywhere (even as one of those abominable print-on-demand
concoctions); or shown on COPAC, WorldCat, or the LOC as being held in
an institutional library; which is curious as the publisher, Warne, is
what would then have been described as a "mainstream" publisher,
printing works of popular, or general, interest. In other words, most -
if not all - of the books they published were not of "fringe" interest.
This fragile little book contains 66 letters covering most aspects of
polite relationships between a man and a woman, e.g., "From a Gentleman
to a Lady whom he has seen but once", "From a Gentleman disclosing a
Passion he has long felt, but hitherto concealed", "From a Tradesman to
a Lady", "From a Lady to a Gentleman who proposes a hasty marriage" (!),
etc. Most of the letters are followed by "answers", sometimes with the
choice of "yea" or "nay" formats. The endpapers contain a printed list
of "Warne's Useful Books". Truly a charming book.

Originally printed on rather inexpensive paper, which has now become
age-toned. The contents are dis-bound, but all pages are present within
the original boards; the boards themselves showing edge-wear, some
scuffing and light soiling. Nonetheless, the binding is tight, and a
careful binder could restore this volume in its original binding, at a
modest cost.

 $125.00.

Terms of sale - the price is in USD. Payment by check, or credit card,
preferred. Postage and packing charge (anywhere in the world) is $7.50.
Returnable within seven days of receipt if not as described.
