      The standard biography of John Rodgers (1772-1838), native of Maryland 
and important figure in the early U.S. Navy. During the War of 1812 he 
captured 23 prizes at sea and came ashore to give valuable service in the 
defense of Baltimore and Ft. McHenry near his home town of Havre de Grace. 
After the war he headed the Board of Navy Commissioners until 1837. Bound in 
dark blue cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine, top edge gilt. 
Tissue-guarded frontispiece and five other plates. Minor extremity bumps, 
small bit of fraying to top fore corner of lower board, otherwise clean and
