[John Shebbeare:] A Fourth Letter to the People of England. On the
Conduct of the M—rs in Alliances, Fleets, and Armies, since the first
Differences on the Ohio, to the taking of Minorca by the French.
London: Printed for M. Collier, Bookseller at the Royal-Exchange,
1756. [WITH:] [Anonymous:] Fourth Letter to the People of England.
London: Printed for M. Cooper, in Pater-noster-Row, 1756. FIRST
EDITIONS. Two pamphlets, untrimmed in original stitched bindings as
issued, 8vo (22 cm); [4] + 111 + [1] pp.; 43 + [1] pp.; with half-
titles. Sabin 80047, 80048; Howes S368; ESTC T40119; T40118.
Two related pamphlets dealing with the Seven Years' War (French and
Indian War). The first, one of a series of attacks by Shebbeare on the
"timid" and "dastardly" policies of the Duke of Newcastle's
administration, is of particular interest for its content dealing with
hostilities on the frontiers of the American colonies, the Ohio River
region in particular, with references to the disastrous Braddock
expedition and George Washington. The second pamphlet, also titled
Fourth Letter and published in the same year, is in fact a response to
Shebbeare's first three "letters." In it, the anonymous author defends
the Newcastle ministry from, among other things, charges that it
favors the interests of Hanover over those of Britain.
