Lincoln, Abraham. Signed endorsement by Abraham Lincoln and his first
Secretary of War, Simon Cameron, on a 4" x 6" piece of paper – all of the
endorsement being on one half of one side. It reads, "Let the appointment be made.
Jan 16, 1862. A. Lincoln." Below which is written, "Respectfully referred to
the President. S. Cameron. War Dept. Dec. 15, 1861." $6,000.00 (trade
discount allowed)
Simon Cameron, Lincoln's first Secretary of War, served for one year before
being removed from this office to become our ambassador to Russia. December
1861, was Cameron's last full month in office, being succeeded by Edwin
Stanton who was confirmed on January 15, 1862. Apparently this autographed
portion was clipped from a letter which informed the President of the request
for a specific appointment. Which exact appointment is unknown.
