Lincoln, Abraham. GENERAL ORDER, NO. 1... A Proclamation... All Persons
Held as Slaves Within Any State... in Rebellion Against the United States,
Shall Be Then, Thenceforward, and Forever Free... Washington: [The GPO] for the
War Department, Adjutant General's Office. January 2, 1863. 4pp. (the final
page blank). The single printed order as originally published. Light
soiling, and with an old light crease. $2,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
An early printing of the final text of the Emancipation Proclamation. In
the Grolier Club's "One Hundred Influential American Books" (#71) this is
described as, "Possibly the first, and certainly the first separate printing of
the Proclamation." It is now known that it is the 5th printing in the course
of a few days. The earlier printings are exceedingly rare, such as the
Illinois State Journal "extra" of Jan. 2, 1863, known only in a single copy, or
a small format two-page printing, also known in a single copy. Usually this
"order" is found bound up with other General Orders of the year, it is
seldom encountered separately. See Streeter Sale, #1751. Monaghan 182.
