(Lovecraft, Howard Phillips)
Cook, W. Paul. In Memoriam, Howard Phillips Lovecraft:
Recollections, Appreciations, Estimates
No place: [The Driftwood Press] [1941].
First Edition.
75 pp. 9x6, original saddle-sewn printed blue wrappers. One of 94
copies. A scarce and important booklet on Howard Phillips Lovecraft
(1890-1937), the early American supernatural and horror author. Cook
was one his best friends who also first published Lovecraft at his
Recluse Press in Athol, Massachusetts. Includes W. Paul Cook's
autograph excised from a front free endpaper of an unknown title,
laid in. Also, with the autographs of Daniel L. Cady (with
rubberstamped address) and Walter J. Coates (with two loose library
bookplates) both dated from 1915, on two different slips of paper.
Written in December, 1940, and printed one page at an impression, by
the author from April to June, 1941, with the cooperation of The
Driftwood Press.
Spine and margins dampstained and discolored (interior & exterior),
soiling, light edge wear; about very good.
A very rare book. One copy at public auction in the past 25 years (as
per American Book Prices Current Auction Records, 2009), and that was
this copy.
Cady and Coates were also both friends of H.P. Lovecraft, and members
of the 'Lovecraft Circle'. W. Paul Cook published 'LAND OF ALLEN AND
OTHER VERSE' by Coates under his imprint THE RECLUSE PRESS, Athol,
Mass, 1928. It should be noted that the Recluse Press was the
publisher of Lovecraft's stillborn first book, 'THE SHUNNED HOUSE' (also 1928).
Net price $450.00 US ppd in Canada and USA
