Junius: Including Letters by the Same Writer, under other Signatures, (now first collected) to which are added, His Confidential Correspondence with Mr. Wilkes, and his Private Letters addressed to Mr. H. S.  Woodfall. With a Preliminary Essay, Notes, ... Junius; Woodfall, G. Ed., F.C. & J. Rivington, T. Payne, et al, London, 1814: Preliminary Essay by Lord George Sackville. Junius ( pseudonym) an English political author of unknown identity who wrote numerous letters to the London Public Advertiser from 1769 - 1772. He used gossip, scandal, and verbal attacks on King George III, and his ministry for their personal immorality or meanness. Letters, centering on the John Wilkes controversy over the Middlesex election, were passionately conveyed by an opponent of the government familiar with secret government matters; from Junius to William Draper; short sketch of Draper's character; Lord Holland's Letter to H. S.  Woodfall, vindicating himself as "the public defaulter of unaccounted millions; extracts from Burke's speech on American Taxes; on the pretensions of Charles Lloyd, John Roberts, Samuel Dryer, John Wilke; Junius to Dr. Wm. Blackstone; retorts to letters written by Junius, etc. Five facsimile letters (fold-out), one plate of "Seals used by Junius". Plate II in volume I am is cleanly torn from the second fold of the letter, the entire plate is in the book. Each volume solidly bound, very clean, bright text, few fox spots throughout 3 volumes, to margin. Three quarter brown calf, marbled boards, page ends, and end papers. Gilt decorations to spine, with five raised bands and black title panel with Junius in gilt, panel beneath name, volume numbers rubbed off. All edges rubbed, mild scuffing of boards. Volume II, closed tear spine edge, corner torn to title plate, title intact; f.e.p. loose from top, attached at lower end. Spine ends rubbed, each f.e.p. has previous owners name to verso.
