We offer for sale: three Massachusetts Resolves concerning: Maine &
the Missouri Compromise, Nullification, and John Adams first speech
as Governor.
1. [Maine & the Missouri Compromise]. Massachusetts. RESOLVES OF THE
GENERAL COURT OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS. PASSED AT THEIR
SESSION WHICH COMMENCED ON WEDNESDAY, THE TWELFTH OF JANUARY, AND
ENDED ON THE TWENTY FIFTH OF FEBRUARY, ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND
TWENTY. Boston: Printed by Russell & Gardner, 1820. [89-205] pp. +
index [8 pp]. Sm. 4to. Original blue gray wrappers, stitched. First
edition. By 1820 Maine was ready to separate from Massachusetts (as
noted in Governor Brooks' speech) and admitted into the Union. The
issue, however, was coupled with the admission of Missouri to the
Union; the result became known as the Missouri compromise which
allowed slavery in Missouri. "The extension of so great a moral and
political evil as slavery... and to make such a prohibition a
condition of the admission of any new state into the Union" wrote
Saltonstall's Massachusetts' committee in Resolve CXXI which also
provided a succinct list the issues. The final resolution would of
course await the outcome of the Civil War. Includes a 12 page section
listing the ownership and status all lands in Maine. Lacking the
spine and rear wrapper, foxing to margins, contents very good.
Shoemaker 2166. [35330] $150.00
2. [Nullification]. Massachusetts. RESOLVES OF THE GENERAL COURT OF
THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS, PASSED AT THEIR SESSION, WHICH
COMMENCED ON WEDNESDAY, THE SECOND OF JANUARY, AND ENDED ON THURSDAY,
THE TWENTY-EIGHTH OF MARCH, ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND
THIRTY-THREE. Boston: Dutton and Wentworth, Printers to the State,
1833. [237-542] pp., ix pp. Sm. 4to. Original blue gray wrappers,
stitched. First edition. The Governor's addresses and much of this
long volume is taken up with Nullification, the South Carolina
Convention, and issues of Federal versus states' authority (though
there was time to pass one resolve to purchase a copy of Audubon's
Birds of America). Provides a view on the issue of preservation of
the Union through the lens of a New England legislature. Lacking the
rear wrapper, scattered foxing, else a very good untrimmed copy.
Shoemaker 20044. [35338] $150.00
3. [Adams,John]. Massachusetts. Adams, John. RESOLVES OF THE GENERAL
COURT OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS: BEGUN AND HELD AT BOSTON,
IN THE COUNTY OF SUFFOLK, ON WEDNESDAY THE TWENTY-NINTH DAY OF MAY,
ANNO DOMINI, 1793; AND FROM THENCE CONTINUED BY ADJOURNMENT AND
PROCLAMATION TO WEDNESDAY, THE FIFTEENTH DAY OF JANUARY FOLLOWING.
[-28 FEBRUARY, 1794]. Boston: Printed by Adams & Larkin, 1794. 33-61
pp. Folio. Stitched. First edition. John Adams first speech as
Governor to the joint session of the Massachusetts legislature.
Discusses Hancock, the Constitution, the French Republic, and the
need for education. Untrimmed edges ragged as usual else about very
good. Evans 27289. [35374] $125.00
