EDITION. Three volumes bound in one. Thick 8vo (19.5 cm); 19th-century

three half-title and title-pages bound in, lacking publisher's

Illustrated throughout with woodcuts by George Cruikshank. A charming
series of tales and experiments aimed at explaining scientific
principles to a young audience. Many popular games and gadgets of the
time are described and analyzed, including pop-guns, soap-bubbles,
whiz-gigs, shuttle-cocks, kites, tricks, optical illusions, the game
of marbles, etc. Of particular interest is Dr. Paris's introduction of
the "thaumatrope", an optical toy considered a significant forerunner
of modern cinema. The work is dedicated to Maria Edgeworth.
