DR. JOHN DEE (a Mathematician of Great Fame in Q. Eliz. And King James 
Their Reignes) and Some Spirits... With a Preface Confirming the Reality (as to 
the Point of Spirits)... by Meric Casaubon. London: D. Maxwell for T. 
Garthwait. 1659. Folio. (80),448;46pp. Title page printed in red & black. Copper 
engraved frontispiece (8 portraits of "the order of the inspirati"). Also 
with 3 engraved plates (1 folding) and woodcut text diagrams. Cont. calf, 
neatly rebacked, preserving the orig. red morocco spine label. Some light text 
soiling. Top blank outer corner of frontispiece repaired and an old neat 
repair to a portion of the title page. This copy with some annotations in ink to 
48 pages by a previous owner, William Slater Brown (see below).

Dee's (d. 1608) famous account of "conferences and apparitions of spirits" 
which was printed from his orig. manuscript in the Cottonian collection in 
the British Library. The previous owner (whose name is written on the front 
free endpaper) William Slater Brown (1896-1997) was an author & close friend 
of E. E. Cummings. He had an interest in the history of spiritualism which 
resulted in his book, THE HEYDAY OF SPIRITUALISM. Wing D811.
