(EMBLEM BOOKS) EMBLEME D'ALCIATI, de Nouveau Tra[n]slatez en Fra[n]cois
Vers Pour Vers Iouxte les Latins.. Lyon: Mace Bonhomme. 1549. 8vo. 267,(5)pp.
Title page within an elaborate woodcut border, and text with 165 woodcut
emblems, each within a woodcut border. Although frequently attributed to Bernard
Salomon, the woodcuts should be assigned to Pierre Eskrich (see Mortimer,
"French Sixteenth Century Books" at Howard #15). A lovely copy in cont.
vellum, "Emblemes d' Alciat" hand lettered at top of spine. $3,500.00 (trade
discount allowed)
This is the first edition of the French translation of Alciati by
Barthelemy Anneau, the Bonhomme issue (the other issue has the imprint of Rouille in
Lyon). Anneau's French version is the first to completely arrange the
subjects of the emblems. Our copy has the cancel slip on M1 verso as noted by
Mortimer, who also cites Baudrier, calling this "The best edition for the
impression of the cuts." Green. ALCIATI #38.
