[J. Dennis Furley:] Choheleth, or the Royal Preacher, A Poem. Most
humbly inscribed to the King. London: Printed for the Author, and sold
by W. Johnston, in Ludgate Street, 1765. FIRST EDITION. Full period
polished calf, 4to (26 x 21cm); [2], xxv, [1], 141, [1] pp. ESTC
T30603; Halkett and Laing vol.I, 330.
A paraphrase of the book of Ecclesiastes written in blank verse,
accompanied by copious notes and a lengthy preface. An exceedingly
uncommon work — ESTC locates only 4 copies in U.S. libraries or
institutions (Columbia, Princeton, U of Texas, Huntington) — with
decidedly murky origins: it has often been wrongly ascribed to
Nathaniel Higgins, a dissenting minister who re-edited it and wrote
the supplemental notes for the 1824 reissue, and as late as 1830 a
notice in The Gentleman's Magazine incorrectly asserts that it was
first published in 1768. The work was highly regarded by both John
Wesley and Adam Clarke.

Wear and bumping to the extremities and the spine, light rubbing to
the boards, front and rear exterior hinges cracked but both boards are
secure; dust-soiling to the edges of the text block, pages toned,
occasional small spots and touches of soiling, previous owners'
signatures on title-page (one crossed out); otherwise clean and sound.
