Fairhaven, VT: James Lyon, 1798. First Edition. The First Vermont
Edition, published previously in Philadelphia and elsewhere. Octavo
bound in full original calf with black leather label; xxiv, 476, [19]
pages. The most popular home medical book of the late 18th and 19th
centuries, stressing the importance of basic hygiene and nutrition in
helping one heal himself. Charming 1836 owner inscription on front blank
describing the presentation of the book from an uncle to a nephew "for
his good attendence to him in his sickness." Few signatures a little
sprung; moderate staining and darkening, heavy to a few pages. Rubbed,
leather label partly scraped away. Good, solid copy.
