KNOWLES, John. A SEPARATE PEACE Inscribed to Photographer Arnold Newman.
New York: The MacMillan Company, 1960. First Edition. Author's first
book, made into a film. In the more commonly encountered second state
dustwrapper with reviews printed on the front and rear panels and with
the corners of the inside front flap clipped, not affecting the price.
This copy with photographer Arnold Newman's SIGNATURE on the front
endpaper with the notation "autograph: and INSCRIBED and SIGNED to
Newman by the author on the title page: "To Arnold--/With hopes that
I/didn't ruin 'your'/photograph, since it [sic] sure/to be a work of
art--/with admiration--/John Knowles/New York - Feb. 6, 1964." Surely a
reference to the photograph taken by Newman and used on the front cover
of the dustwrapper of Knowles's 1964 book DOUBLE VISION: AMERICAN
THOUGHTS ABROAD. When this title is found signed, and it seldom is, it
is usually in a larger, later hand and rarely to anyone of importance.
Red ink mark at the base of the spine of both the dustwrapper and book.
Near Fine in a Very Good, lightly stained dustwrapper with corners
clipped but the price present.. $6,000.00
