[PAINE, THOMAS, editor & contributor.] THE PENNSYLVANIA MAGAZINE: OR, AMERICAN MONTHLY MUSEUM. Philadelphia: R. Aitken, 1775. 3 issues: February, March & May. Feb. has one leaf half gone & 3 missing; March has one leaf gone & one leaf half gone; May has two leaves torn but complete, pp. 227/8 partly gone, nothing after p. 228. No plates, many corners dog-eared. &c. FEBRUARY AND MARCH HAVE BOTH FRONT AND REAR WRAPPERS, MAY HAS FRONT WRAPPER ONLY (missing pages, as noted above, at the rear.) THESE WRAPPERS ARE SCARCER THAN HENS' TEETH. No 1775 copies sold at auction appear to have had wrappers, having either been bound up or disbound. No copy presently for sale in wrappers. Lomazow, "American Periodicals", proudly lists one copy only in wrappers (Jan., 1776) and says: "One of the earliest and rarest examples of printed wrappers on an American periodical." Despite their abused state, here are noble remnants. $500.00
