Carpenter (1821-1906), the editor of "The Wisconsin Patriot," while an
ardent Abolitionist, deplored the conduct and wartime decisions of Abraham
Lincoln. His play in verse at the end (pp. 333-342), "The Irrepressible
Conflict," includes "The Principal Acts in the Life of Abraham the First." The first
edition of this work was published in pamphlet form. This "Second Edition"
is actually the first edition published as an expanded book.
