BURROUGHS, John. AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT SIGNED: "Bird Life in an Old Apple
Tree" np, [circa 1881] . An incomplete working draft of his "Bird Life
in an Old Apple Tree," with several corrections in ink or pencil; 12
pages, mostly 5" x 8" with one slightly larger but folded to size,
written on one side of each sheet. Consists of pages 1-2, 7, 9-14, 16-18
of 18 missing three of the twelve paragraphs and part of two others. The
essay was collected in RIVERBY published in 1894 and is one of
Burroughs's best-known pieces. In this essay the pre-eminent American
nature writer of his time describes the various birds who visit his
octogenarian apple tree including bluebirds, woodpeckers, and
flycatchers. Minor smudging to signature, toning overall, one leaf
inexpertly repaired with cello tape. Near Fine. $2,500.00
