[HAND-COLORED COSTUME PLATES]. JOURNAL DES DAMES ET DES MODES. [Paris]: 
(Revue de La Mesangere), 1816 - 1818. First Edition. Six octavo (4-3/4" 
x 7-3/4") volumes bound in contemporary calf-backed decorated boards 
with contrasting red and black gilt-lettered spine labels and gilt spine 
decorations. A full three years of this scarce publication which began 
in 1797 and lasted until 1839. Present are all of the issues for the 
period of 1816 - 1818 but one (Issue 63 from 1818) and a total of 247 
hand-colored fashion plates of predominantly but not exclusively women 
numbered from 1533 to 1784. The 4 plates not accounted for are 1668 and 
1739, both the second plate in a single issue, and plates 1773 and 1774 
from the missing issue. Most of the plates feature people dressed in 
fashions of the time, but there are also plates of individual items, 
usually hats and several to a plate. University library bookplate on 
front pastedowns and ink stamps on title pages and bottom edge of bulked 
text, but in general the text is clean and all of the plates are 
unmarked. Covers firm, with slight loss of leather from small area on 
spine where tape was removed. Plates generally clean and fresh; binding
