Greetings Booklovers,
We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 3066 ) Freeman, Douglas Southall. R. E. LEE: A BIOGRAPHY (COMPLETE IN
FOUR VOLUMES).
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, (1936). Full cloth, Octavos, ca. 2400
pages, Black & white photographs, maps. Very good, No dust jackets.
The Pulitzer Prize Edition of this monumental work, which remains the
finest biography of Lee. The research is superb and the documentation
thorough and precise. In the hands of a less able biographer this amount of
detail would overwhelm most readers, but Freeman makes it all come alive.
While Freeman was sympathetic to Lee, he is certainly not afraid to weigh
all the evidence. Well illustrated with plates and maps, including some
fold-outs. In addition, each volume has several pages of extra illustrations
at rear which were specially selected for this edition. Extensive
bibliography. See EICHER #262; CIVIL WAR BOOKS Vol. II, p. 57; DORNBUSCH
#2930, etc. Bound in grey leather-textured cloth over boards with
gilt-stamped spines on red title blocks, border rule and oval profile of Lee
in gilt on upper boards. Clean set overall with some minor extremity rubs
and mild browning to textblock edges. Hinges not cracked....... $125.00
