GRIFFIN, WALTER [PARSON SHAW].  FARMINGTON SKETCHES.  [Harford: Griffin, ca.1900.]  Original cloth portfolio, 12 X 16 inches, covers lightly spotted, printed title in what the artist described as "handsome" hand lettering.  Contains 6 prints, as issued, EACH SIGNED IN PENCIL BY THE ARTIST.  The subjects are The Old Stage Coach, The Old Bridge, The Old Church, The Church and Chapel, The Road from the Mill, & The Spire (one print with a small marginal tear.)  Griffin did many illustrations for "The Farmington Magazine" (1900-1902) and these may have been among them.  According to an advt. in the magazine the portfolio was for sale at the Farmington Drug Store for $2.00 or could be ordered from Griffin, 700 Main St., Hartford.  Many of his landscapes were of the Farmington, Conn., area which he called "The Barbizon of America." Well-known in his day, Griffin was a friend of or associated with a number of major artists, his closest friend  being Childe Hassam.  $500.00
