[HAND-COLORED COSTUME PLATES]. A COLLECTION OF THE DRESSES OF DIFFERENT
NATIONS, ANTIENT AND MODERN. PARTICULARLY OLD ENGLISH DRESSES... London:
Thomas Jefferys, 1757-1772. First Edition. Four quarto (7-3/4" x
10-3/4") volumes bound in contemporary mottled painted calf with
gilt-ruled boards and gilt-decorated spines with red morocco
gilt-lettered spine labels; all edges gilt. Cicognara 1776; Lipperheide
Ac7. Text, including title pages, in English and French. Title pages
printed in red and black with engraved hand-colored vignettes.
Illustrated with 479 (of 480) beautifully hand-colored plates of men and
women of various times and countries all around the world, including 22
of people of the Americas, after the designs of Holbein, Vandyke,
Hollar, and others. A few plates are trimmed closely at the bottom into
the caption, and there is some slight dust soiling, but overall the
plates are very nice and untouched. Plate 140 in the second volume has
two short tape repairs on the verso. The missing plate, not too
surprisingly, is that of Joan of Arc. Plates clean; bindings somewhat
worn and dry but intact.
MAJOR DESIGN SOURCE FOR COSTUME DESIGNER BARBARA KARINSKA, each volume
with her SIGNATURE, the first dated "Hollywood 1943." From Hollywood
classics to Balanchine ballet to the Ice Capades, Madame Karinska's
costumes were legendary. Trained as an embroiderer in Russia, Karinska
was valued for the superb quality and historical accuracy of her
cinematic costumes; she won an Academy Award in 1948 for JOAN OF ARC
starring Ingrid Bergman. After 1964 her costume atelier worked
exclusively for the New York City Ballet, with Karinska's designs
perfectly complementing the genius of her friend George Balanchine.
