[HAWTHORNE, Nathaniel] GOODRICH, S. E. (editor). THE TOKEN AND ATLANTIC
SOUVENIR, A CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR'S PRESENT. Boston: American
Stationers' Company, 1838. First Edition. Octavo, 312 pages, bound in
full black gilt-decorated morocco, all edges gilt. Includes the first
publication of five pieces by Hawthorne (BAL 7583), two by Sarah J. Hale
(BAL 6816), two by Lydia Sigourney (BAL 17710), and two by Sarah
Whitman, Poe's fiancee (BAL 21351). Illustrated with an engraved title
page, a presentation plate, and seven of eight engravings (lacking the
"The Expected Canoe" plate). Only two of the five Hawthorne pieces are
attributed to him in the table of contents: "Peter Goldthwaite's
Treasure" and "The Shaker Bride." Four of the five were later collected
in TWICE-TOLD TALES. Beautiful example of an early American binding with
only light rubbing at corners and edges. Contents mostly clean with just
a few pages lightly stained; rear hinge cracked with somewhat crude
repair; covers tight. Superb copy externally. $450.00
