Reil founded the first journal of physiology and the first journal devoted to mental illness; he coined the word 'psychiatry.' He first decribed 'Beau's Lines', 'Reil's Finger' (digitus mortuus), the 'Fillet of Reil', 'Reil's Trangle' & the 'Island of Reil' (the insula of the cerebral cortex.)
