*/THE SCOTS MAGAZINE. Containing a General View of the Religion,
Politicks, Entertainment, &c. in Great Britain: And a Succinct Account
of Publick Affairs Foreign and Domestic for the year MDCCXLVII / Volume
IX/* 1747, 1st edition, 8vo, pp. 651, [13]. Printed for W. Sands, A.
Murray, and J. Cochran, of Edinburgh.
¶ The Scots Magazine is the oldest magazine in the world still in
publication, although there were several gaps in its publishing history.
The first issued appeared in January, 1739, and it continued until 1826
when, due to decreasing sales, publication was halted. It resumed
publication again in 1888 and continued until 1893, when the magazine
again suspended publication until 1924 when it was taken over by its
present owner. Our copy contains all twelve monthly issues for 1747 with
comprehensive indices at the end of the volume to debates, essays,
histories etc; poetry; marriages, births, deaths etc; preferments; and
books. The individual issues have been bound into one volume of plain
19th century brown buckram. The contents show occasional foxing and some
age-toning to the pages, but the entire volume is perfectly readable.
Overall, in good condition in a sturdy, if pedestrian, binding.
