Anecdotes Scandaleuses de la Cour de France. No place (London?): Imprime a cent 
lieues de la Bastille... 1772. Sm. 8vo. 174pp. Engraved frontispiece (mounted on 
paper guard at inner margin). Finely bound in 19th c, 1/2 red morocco, gilt 
decorated spine, over cloth. T.e.g. Frontispiece with bottom caption 
trimmed. Bookplate of Paul E. Bechet and with a page of his notes on a blank

Theveneau de Morande (1741-1805) was a notorious literary low-life, 
blackmailer and French spy, who lived in London from 1769-1791. At one point he 
received a pay-off and royal pension in return for suppressing a lampoon of the 
French king's mistress. Madame du Barry. "Le Gazetier Cuirasse" is his most 
famous work. This edition of 1772 is scarce.
