Greetings Booklovers,
We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 2486 ) Lever, Darcy. THE YOUNG SEA OFFICERS' SHEET ANCHOR; OR A KEY TO
THE LEADING OF RIGGING AND TO PRACTICAL SEAMANSHIP. WITH AN APPENDIX
CONTAINING SEVERAL FIGURES ILLUSTRATIVE OF NOVELTIES AND IMPROVEMENTS IN
RIGGING, &C &C &C..
New York: Edward W. Sweetman Co., 1963. Facsimile reprint, Full cloth,
Quarto, xiv, 124 pages, black & white engravings. Near Fine, No dust jacket.
A facsimile reprint of the second edition done originally in London in
1819. Original full page engravings reproduced. Probably was the most well
illustrated book on seamanship at the time. Lever wanted to provide a guide
which would offer explicit and visual answers for young officers in the
Royal Navy and the Honourable East India Company's service who might be
hesitant to show their ignorance by asking questions. The result is this
exceptional window on early 19th century seamanship. This copy is from the
library of noted naval architect Thomas Gillmer, with his bookplate on front
pastedown. Bound in coarse brown cloth over boards with dark brown spine
lettering, dark violet top stain. Shallow bump to heel of spine. Very nice
copy....... $50.00
