(PHILOSOPHY) Bougeante, Guillaume Hyacinth. AMUSEMENT PHILOSOPHIQUE SUR LA
LANGAGE DES BESTES. Paris: Gissey, Bordelet & Ganeau. 1739. First edition.
Sm. 8vo. 3 parts in 1. (4),157,(3);46,(2);(4)pp. With the half-title. Cont.
calf, gilt spine, extremities somewhat rubbed, front hinge starting but still
very sound. $350.00 (trade discount allowed)
The second part is the supplement titled "Lettre a Madame La Comtesse D***
Pour Servir de Supplement a l'Amusement Philosophique sur le Language des
Betes" dated March 20th, 1789. The third part is "Lettre du P. Bougeant
Jesuite, a Monsieur l'Abbe Savolitte, Conseiller au Grand Conseil" with the
imprint at back "Paris: Chez Merigot. 1739." This work is found with the main text
only; with the two parts, and with 3 parts, as described. A curious work,
considering whether animals have souls, and the use of language.
