  STENGEL, Casey. AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT: 1966 HANDWRITTEN NOTES FOR CASEY 
STENGEL'S HALL OF FAME INDUCTION SPEECH. A 2-1/2 page handwritten 
manuscript on three sheets containing Stengel's notes for his induction 
speech to the Hall of Fame in 1966, an honor he shared that year with 
Ted Williams, who gave one of the most important speeches in baseball 
history when he asked the Hall to open its doors to Negro Leagues 
players. Stengel, whose career began as a player in 1912 and ended as a 
manager in 1965, was one of the most colorful figures in the game, noted 
for his twists of language and truisms such as "Good pitching beats good 
hitting, and vice versa." As manager of the Yankees, he won 7 World 
Series out of 9 appearances in 12 years. Mickey Mantle in his Hall of 
Fame speech said that his father and Stengel were responsible for his 
success. He also managed the 1962 Mets, the worst team in modern 
baseball. After their final loss that season, Casey told his players, 
"This has been a team effort. No one or two guys could have done all 
this." The notes begin "Hall of Fame & Museum, Cooperstown, N.Y., July 
25th 1966," mention "Ted Williams, perfect swing, can hit distance, 
greatest batter hitting L. handed in my experience in the American 
League." He cites many players: Ruth, Cobb, Dimaggio, Mantle, often with 
a comment, and lists the names of all the original inductees. He 
mentions Abner Doubleday, One-Cat Two-Cat or Rounders, "girls teams 
1890-1, Dresses with bloomers," and much more. These pages may have been 
on the podium with Casey when he accepted baseball's greatest honor. In 
any event, they are important and historic. Writing dark and clear. Very
