(WOMEN) Le Moyne, Pierre. LA GALLERIE DES FEMMES FORTES. Leyden & Paris:
Jean Elzevir & Charles Angot. 1660. 12mo. (70),452,(24)pp. With an engraved
frontispiece and 20 fine engraved plates. Contemporary vellum, somewhat
soiled. Some light toning of the paper. With the engraved bookplate of Elizabeth
Wade White. $750.00 (trade discount allowed)
First and only Elzevir edition, and only the second appearance (the first
is Paris: 1647) of this popular collection of historical and biographical
sketches of heroic women of history, from ancient times to the author’s own
days, including Joan of Arc and Mary Stuart. Pierre Le Moyne (1602-1671) was a
celebrated Jesuit scholar and poet; his work, illustrated with a fine series
of twenty plates illustrating the subjects was very popular: it was
re-issued constantly until the late 18th century, and was translated into Italian,
Spanish, and English (under the title “Gallery of Heroick Women” in 1652).
Willems, 864; De Backer-Sommervogel V, 1362.
