frontispiece and 20 fine engraved plates. Contemporary vellum, somewhat 
soiled. Some light toning of the paper. With the engraved bookplate of Elizabeth

First and only Elzevir edition, and only the second appearance (the first 
is Paris: 1647) of this popular collection of historical and biographical 
sketches of heroic women of history, from ancient times to the author’s own 
days, including Joan of Arc and Mary Stuart. Pierre Le Moyne (1602-1671) was a 
celebrated Jesuit scholar and poet; his work, illustrated with a fine series 
of twenty plates illustrating the subjects was very popular: it was 
re-issued constantly until the late 18th century, and was translated into Italian, 
Spanish, and English (under the title “Gallery of Heroick Women” in 1652).
