Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 11299 ) Dana, Richard Henry, Jr. (1815-1882). TWO YEARS BEFORE THE
MAST. A PERSONAL NARRATIVE.
Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, (1911). Illustrated
edition, Original cloth, Octavo, xiv, 553 pages, color plates by E. Boyd
Smith. Fine in a Very Good, Price Clipped dust jacket, Jacket in Mylar
protector.
A classic of American nautical literature and California history,
originally published in 1840. Dana shipped around Cape Horn as a common
sailor aboard a Boston merchant vessel to trade for hides and tallow up and
down the California coast in 1835-1836. His keen powers of observation and
narrative skill make this the best account of the hide trade in California
before the War with Mexico, and a vivid document of the daily life of a
merchant sailor in the 1830s. Includes descriptive vignettes of San Diego,
Los Angeles, Monterey, and San Francisco. This edition includes Dana's
follow-up observations upon his return visit to California in 1859, comments
by his son "Seventy-Six Years After," appendices on ships sails, spars and
rigging and extracts from the unofficial log of Andrew B. Amazeen who was
first mate on board the Alert with Dana on his return from San Diego to
Boston. Lovely illustrations by Smith. Bound in red cloth over boards with
black stamped lettering and ornaments on spine, endpaper maps. Prior owner
embossed monogram at lower fore corner of title page, endpapers mildly
browned, shallow bumps at spine ends. Jacket has mild browning, a .5" chip
at top edge of front panel, shallow chips at spine ends. Handsome copy of a
nice edition....... $50.00
