[Desfontaines, Pierre Francois Guyot, abbe]. LE NOUVEAU GULLIVER, OU
VOYAGE DE JEAN GULLIVER, FILS DU CAPITAINE GULLIVER. Traduit d'un
Manuscript Anglois, par Monsieur L. D. F. Paris: La Veuve Clouzier et
Francois le Breton. 1730. 16mo. 2 vols. (32),262,(6);(8),260pp.
Complete with the half-titles. Cont. calf, gilt decorated spines with
brown calf labels. Very minor worming to covers & some rubbing, but
still an attractive set. $1,250.00 (trade discount allowed)
A notable and quite original companion to Swift's masterpiece which
Desfontaines (1685-1745) had previously translated (in 1727) for the
French edition. This French "sequel" was, in turn, translated into
English in 1731. Barbier III, 502; Dunmore. IMAGINARY VOYAGES #94. The
Paris edition precedes the Amsterdam edition of the same year. In
addition, there are at least 2 Paris, 1730, reprints which are
differently paginated from ours (all with fewer pages).
