(AMERICANA) Lewis, Merriwether and William Clark. THE JOURNAL OF LEWIS
AND CLARKE [sic], to the Mouth of the Columbia River Beyond the Rocky
Mountains. In the Years 1804-5, & 6... New Edition, with Notes.
Revised, Corrected, and Illustrated with Numerous Wood Cuts. To Which
Is Added a Complete Dictionary of the Indian Tongue. Dayton, OH: B. F.
Ells. John Wilson, Printer. 1840. Sm. 8vo. 240pp. Illustrated with
woodcut portraits of Lewis & Clark and 14 full-page woodcuts (2 are
partially hand colored). Cont. calf, rebacked, orig. red calf label
laid down. $500.00 (trade discount allowed)
An interesting but surreptitious and somewhat apocryphal account of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition. Though the publisher claimed in his
advertisement to have "corrected much that was erroneous," he also
introduced numerous irrelevant anecdotes and plates, and created a
number of new errors, not the least of which was his "Dictionary of the
Indian Tongue." Howes L321.
