PATERCULUS, M. VELLEIUS. HISTORIAE ROMANAE]. CUM NOTIS GERARDI VOSII.
Leiden: Officina Elzeveriana, 1639.
Old calf, nicely rebacked with calf and new labels, raised bands; 12mo, approx. 4-3/4 X 2-3/4 inches, [8], 116, [26], 128, [2] pages. Nice vignette title showing a Roman soldier carrying a man on his back with Rome, ships & a hillside in the background. A few old marginalia. Willems 484 cites 2 printings; this is the earlier, with the Dedication dated "pridie Kal. Majas." This edition was reprinted word for word by Jean & Daniel Elzevir in 1654 & by Louis & Daniel in 1664. (Paterculus was a military tribune, public official & historian. His "History" survived in but one worn copy which was discovered in Murbach Abbey in Alsace in 1515, and is now lost. His principal patron was Tiberius.)
